Very Good
Written by Fannie Merritt Farmer, principal of Miss Farmer's School of Cookery and author of the Boston Cooking-School Cook Book, this is the second edition of her specialized guide to feeding the ill and recovering, first published in 1904. The book covers the preparation of food for patients with a wide range of conditions, with guidance on nutrition, digestion, and diet for the sick. The frontispiece depicts a nurse holding an infant.
This copy contains a remarkable collection of tucked-in ephemera. Most notable is a tattered but legible promotional pamphlet issued by Fairchild Bros. and Foster of New York titled Please Read This Pamphlet: Peptogenic Powder Modifies Cows' Milk, an early infant formula product that was among the first attempts to chemically replicate human breast milk for infant feeding. Also tucked in are several newspaper clippings including Food for the Growing Child by Mabel Dulon Purdy dated July 1915, a Shepherd's Pie recipe, and Menus of the Day by Miss Alexander George, along with a handwritten quick cake recipe on loose paper, a folded lined paper with a handwritten recipe, and a small physician's pocket reference card for home modification of cow's milk issued by the H. Phillips Chemical Company.
Bound in green cloth with teal and gold titles and decoration to the front board and spine. Illustrated with photographic plates and in-text illustrations throughout.
Very good condition. Binding shows shelf wear particularly to the head and tail caps, with bumped corners. Interior has light toning throughout. Very Good. Item #119
