4pp. [7 x 4 inches] [English] Very Good

Mary Pierson Eddy (1864–1923) is quite an important figure in early medical and missionary history, especially considering she was one of the first American women to practice medicine abroad and the first to be officially licensed in the Ottoman Empire. She spent years working throughout Syria and the surrounding region, establishing clinics, performing surgeries, and treating large numbers of patients at a time when very few women were doing this kind of work anywhere, let alone overseas.

This 1901 letter was written while she was traveling in the United States, arranging a short stay in Baltimore and mentioning her intention to hear Rev. Campbell Morgan speak. The letter is addressed to Mrs. Campbell, his wife, which places Eddy in direct contact with one of the more prominent evangelical figures of the period, and gives a real glimpse into her stateside connections within the religious and social circles that supported her work. While letters from Eddy do appear on the market from time to time, examples written during her time in the United States are less commonly encountered, as much of her life and work was based overseas.
