First edition of Donald C. Laycock’s important study and dictionary of Enochian, the “Angelic” language recorded by the Elizabethan occultist John Dee during his experiments with the spirit medium Edward Kelley. The work begins with a preface by Stephen Skinner placing Dee and Kelley within the magical and alchemical world of 16th-century Europe, followed by Laycock’s history and examination of Enochian and its development through Dee’s recorded communications with angels and spirits.

The majority of the book is devoted to Laycock’s extensive dictionary of the language, arranged in both Angelic-English and English-Angelic sections. Laycock drew directly from Dee’s surviving manuscripts and the later printed account of his spirit communications, while also examining Enochian material used by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley. The book concludes with the Enochian Calls, the series of invocations central to Dee’s system of angelic magic, followed by a bibliography.

Bound in the original black cloth with ornate gilt decoration to the front board and gilt titles to the spine. A little bit of blemishing to the front and back boards with some bumping to the corners, mostly along the bottom. Internally very clean throughout.
