Very Good

A nineteenth-century antiquarian study of the ancient city of Therrouanne, tracing its history from the Roman period under Julius Caesar through its final destruction in 1553 by order of Emperor Charles V. The work also includes a separate discourse on the Portus Itius of Caesar, engaging with debates over the location of Caesar’s point of embarkation for Britain. Illustrated with two folding maps, including a frontispiece bird’s-eye view and a second, more conventional cartographic map.

This copy contains the armorial bookplate of the Owen family, specifically Owen of Montgomeryshire, Wales, and later Owen of Tedsmore, Shropshire, establishing documented Welsh gentry provenance.

Bound in 3/4 blue morocco over marbled boards, with gilt bands to the spine and a gilt title over a red morocco spine label. Red speckled edges and marbled endpapers.

It is in Very Good condition with heavy shelf wear and rubbing to the top and bottom boards and some rubbing to the spine, bumped corners, and minor foxing throughout. The heaviest foxing is present on the bird’s-eye view map and the title page; otherwise, the text and both folding maps remain intact and sound. Very Good. Item #21
