A fascinating work on alchemy, mysticism, and symbolism by British artist Frederick Carter, originally published in London in 1926. Carter explores the deeper meanings behind alchemical imagery, particularly the dragon and its connection to spiritual transformation, mythology, and astrology. The book includes an introduction by Arthur Machen, the Welsh author known for his supernatural and occult fiction. Carter was also associated with artists and writers including Austin Osman Spare, Aleister Crowley, and D. H. Lawrence. This 1979 edition is a facsimile of the original 1926 publication and reproduces Carter's 38 striking mystical and alchemical designs, engraved on wood by W. M. R. Quick.
Bound in the original gold-colored illustrated softcovers with black lettering and designs. Very good condition with minor shelf wear and light chipping to the extremities. Interior is exceptionally clean, with crisp, clean pages throughout.
