Very Good
An extensively illustrated and emblematic 17th-century edition of Phaedrus, and one of the more richly illustrated and visually engaging emblematic editions of the period. This edition contains the text of 92 Phaedrus fables with extensive annotations, expanding significantly on earlier editions such as the 1596 Pierre Pithou printing, which included only 64 fables. Illustrated with an additional engraved title-page by Christian Hagen and 103 half-page vignette engravings throughout the text, the imagery functions emblematically, pairing moral instruction with visual allegory. This copy is complete with all engravings present, including the often-canceled brothel illustration on page 276, a feature frequently noted in bibliographical descriptions.
Bound in contemporary vellum with manuscript title to the spine and a manuscript date in a separate hand. The binding remains strong and intact, slightly splayed, with shelf wear including scratches, small dents, and areas of discoloration. Illustrated throughout with emblematic engravings. A tipped-in printed description from a previous seller is present, along with a manuscript note calling special attention to the illustration on page 276, which remains intact in this copy.
It is in Very Good condition overall. There is slight foxing throughout and occasional ink stains, with the most noticeable on page 71. A tear to the lower margin of page 182 slightly enters the text without loss. A handful of pages show small dog-eared losses at the corners, none affecting the text. The vellum binding remains strong and intact, slightly splayed, with shelf wear including scratches, small dents, and areas of discoloration. Very Good. Item #32
