An important Berlin and Leipzig printing of Jacob Böhme’s Aurora (Morgenröte im Aufgang), the first and most influential of his writings. Originally composed in 1612, this mystical text brought charges of heresy against Böhme but went on to shape the course of German theosophy, Pietism, and esoteric philosophy. The Aurora sets out his vision of creation and divine order, blending philosophy, astrology, and theology into a spiritual cosmology that would influence generations of thinkers.

The engraved frontispiece “Aurora” and accompanying emblematic plate continue the tradition of the Gichtel engravings, first introduced in the Amsterdam editions of the 1680s by Böhme’s follower Johann Georg Gichtel. These images became the definitive visual expression of Böhme’s cosmology and were reproduced in later editions such as this.

Bound in black pastepaper with veined pattern, pastedown with a manuscript spine title.

It is in Very Good condition, with light foxing in places, a small stain at pp. 121/128, scattered toning, and an ownership inscription on the endpaper dated 1857.

The inscription “J. L. Jacobi, Gotha 1857” likely refers to Justus Ludwig Jacobi (1815–1888), Protestant church historian and professor at Halle, who wrote on early Christianity and heterodox theology. His field of study and the place and date of the inscription align closely with ownership of Böhme’s Aurora, making this a probable provenance. Very Good. Item #34
