Illustrated throughout with more than 1200 plates and in-text figures, including gravures in double suite, 26 hand-colored plates, and a hand-colored frontispiece opening each volume. The set comprises the English translation of Maspero’s Histoire ancienne des peuples de l’Orient classique (first nine volumes), Rappoport’s three-volume continuation through the Greco-Roman period, and the supplemental volume by King and Hall, History of Egypt in the Light of Recent Discovery, which is not always present. Together, the thirteen volumes form one of the most extensive and richly illustrated histories of the ancient Near East produced in the early twentieth century. Handsomely bound in ¾ green Morocco over marbled boards, with four raised bands, ornate gilt spines decorated with crescent moons and floral motifs, gilt lining to boards, gilt top edges, and uncut edges. It is in Near Fine condition, with Morocco spines uniformly faded to brown, light wear to the headbands, and minor repairs to six volumes (Maspero IV and IX, Rappoport I–III, and King and Hall). There is some toning to margins and a touch of edgewear to endpapers, but the text and plates remain very clean throughout. Complete in all volumes and pagination. Near Fine. Item #39
