Firsthand recollections of early California by William Heath Davis, who lived and worked in the region for decades. The book covers daily life, trade, travel, and settlement from the Mexican period through the Gold Rush and into the American era, written by someone directly involved in California’s early commercial and social development.
Laid in are two association items from John Howell-Books: a typed letter on John Howell-Books letterhead dated July 10, 1980, signed by Warren R. Howell and addressed to Max Reinhardt, and a separate handwritten and signed presentation note dated March 18, 1980. Reinhardt was chairman of The Bodley Head, a major and highly respected British publishing house known for literary fiction and serious nonfiction, during the early 1980s. The letters link this copy directly to a prominent twentieth-century publisher and literary figure.
Bound in light brown cloth with gilt title to the spine and a cornucopia device in darker brown on the front board. Deckled edges.
It is in Near Fine condition, with the main flaw being heavily bumped corners to the binding. The interior pages remain very clean. Near Fine. Item #49
