Very Good
Number 590 of 1250 copies printed. First edition. Written in 1704, when John Evelyn was in his eighty-fourth year, this work was composed as personal advice and moral guidance for his grandson. It reflects Evelyn’s views on conduct, education, religion, and personal discipline, offering a concise and intimate distillation of the thinking of one of the central figures of seventeenth-century English intellectual life. The text is transcribed and presented with a preface and notes by Geoffrey Keynes.
Bound in original cream paper boards with blind-embossed decoration to the covers and gilt lettering to the spine. Printed on French handmade paper. Pages untrimmed. Housed in the original marbled paper-covered slipcase.
It is in Very Good condition. There is a slight splay to the front cover at the fore-edge. The text remains very clean, with no notable blemishes. The slipcase shows minor wear, including rubbing to the edges and corners, and a one-inch crack at the top, but remains intact and functional. Very Good. Item #57
