Condition: Very Good
Expanded Amsterdam edition of Gale’s collection of mythological, physical, and ethical treatises, presenting Greek and Latin texts in parallel columns. This 1688 issue is a considerably enlarged revision of the 1671 Cambridge edition, with nearly 250 additional pages of classical fragments and moral, mythological, and philosophical writings.
Bound in contemporary vellum with manuscript title to the spine, blind-stamped borders, gilt fleurons, and the gilt image of a Greek or Roman warrior with a crane and owl to both boards, bearing the motto “HAGAE COMITIS” — Latin for “of The Hague.” The binding remains tight and strong, showing fine craftsmanship typical of Leiden’s prize bindings of the period.
It is in Very Good condition with light shelf wear to the vellum, slightly bumped corners, and some rubbing and fading to the gilt on the front board. The fleurons on the spine have mostly lost their gilding, while the rear board remains cleaner and more vivid. Inside, there are a few small pencil notes from a previous bookseller on the first page, and occasional minor stains or small spots resembling foxing or ash burns. Otherwise, the interior is clean, bright, and well-preserved, with sound paper and a solid binding throughout. Very Good. Item #6
