Very Good
Substantial late nineteenth-century history of Freemasonry and related orders, compiled under the direction of Henry Leonard Stillson, with European scholarship overseen by William James Hughan. Intended as a broad reference work, it traces the development of the fraternity from early traditions through the modern period. The book is illustrated throughout, including ten plates illustrated by Gustave Doré. Doré’s plates are really the standout feature here, adding a dramatic and symbolic edge that sets this book apart from a lot of other Masonic history volumes.
Bound in dark green cloth with gilt titles to the front board and spine. Illustrated throughout with engraved plates, including a foldout map and the ten Doré illustrations.
It is in Very Good condition, with general shelf wear, a slight lean, light wear to the top and bottom spine caps, bumped corners at the top, and bumped and rubbed corners at the bottom. Internally, there is a bookplate of a previous owner, Dalton Alexander Nolan, a high-ranking Freemason in California. The pages show minor spotting near the beginning; otherwise, they remain mostly clean. Very Good. Item #72
