A fascinating 17th-century work bridging alchemy and practical chymistry, Chimischer Wegweiser serves as a comprehensive guide to chemical operations, laboratory techniques, and the transformation of substances. Written by Christophe Glaser, a respected apothecary and chemist, this book offers a structured approach to chemical arts, making it a valuable reference for both alchemists and early modern chemists.

The text presents detailed instructions for working with metals, salts, and distillations, including the purification of Salmiac (ammonium chloride), separation of antimony, and refining metallic compounds. Its focus on Spiritus Vini (Alcohol) and its role in extraction and purification demonstrates the growing shift from traditional alchemy toward a more practical and experimental chymistry. While not a purely mystical alchemical treatise, the book integrates Paracelsian and Hermetic ideas, particularly in its discussions on the spirit of substances and their transformations. Certain passages reflect a philosophical approach to chemical changes, reminiscent of classical alchemical texts, yet much of the content is pragmatic and laboratory-focused. This second German edition, published in Jena by Johann Jacob Bauhofer, reflects the increasing demand for accessible chemical knowledge in the late 17th century. Used by apothecaries, metallurgists, and early chemists, it represents an important transitional work that merges alchemical traditions with emerging scientific methodologies.

A significant text for those interested in early chemistry, alchemical metallurgy, and the evolution of laboratory practices, Chimischer Wegweiser stands as both a practical manual and a historical artifact of chymical knowledge in the 1600s.

Rebound in quarter leather over brown cloth boards, with gilt titles and date to the spine. Features a fully illustrated frontispiece depicting a laboratory and three folding plates showcasing chemistry/alchemy equipment.

Condition is Good, with the binding being Very Good, showing only minor shelf wear and lightly bumped corners. The primary issue is the significant grubbiness of the pages, particularly heavy on pages 302 and 303. There are wormholes throughout, most notably from pages 35 to 189, though they do not affect the text. Page 445 is missing, and the second leaf in the contents at the end has been replaced with a handwritten manuscript page. The page edges are rough and worn, with some heavily trimmed pages throughout. However, the fold-out illustrations remain in very good condition, and despite the wear, the text and information inside are still clear and legible. Good. Item #78
