Very Good
Henry Adams’s influential autobiography, first privately printed in 1907 and issued to the public in this first trade edition in 1918. Written in the third person, the book reflects on Adams’s intellectual development while tracing the political, cultural, and scientific shifts of the nineteenth century. Part memoir, part critique of modern education and historical progress, it remains one of the most important autobiographical works in American literature. This is the true first trade printing, identified by the Roman numeral date 1918 on the title page, which is absent from later printings.
Publisher’s blue cloth, gilt-lettered to the spine and front cover.
It is in Very Good condition, with shelf wear and light stains to the covers, bumped corners, some light fading and staining at the base of the spine, and mild wrinkling along the spine in places. The binding remains solid. Internally clean, with a previous owner’s inscription to the front endpaper signed Gordon Douglas. Very Good. Item #91
Price: $400.00
