Very Good
This unique and scarce little post-Prohibition booklet was produced by the Suburban Club Carbonated Beverage Company of Baltimore, Maryland. Inside, it gives their pitch on how the world had progressed after Prohibition and how drinking culture changed along with it. The days of raw, biting straight drinks had been replaced with higher-quality mixtures, giving rise to the emerging cocktail trend seen during and after the Prohibition era.
The idea is summed up perfectly in their own logic: if Suburban Club ginger ale could make poor liquor taste good, imagine how much better a highball would be if it had good liquor in it. In other words, Prohibition taught people to enjoy what they call civilization’s art of mixed drinks.
The booklet contains twelve pages total, with five pages devoted to cocktail recipes and six pages outlining Suburban Club’s philosophy and pitch on modern drinking culture. A great snapshot of post-Prohibition marketing and the shift toward mixed drinks in American bar culture.
Orange soft covers, staple-bound. Small oblong format.
It is in Very Good condition, with light staining to the covers, some mild creasing to the soft covers, and a dog-eared top rear corner. Internally clean and complete. Very Good. Item #97
